Day 15: Short day to Master Splinter’s Cabin

Day 15 – 5/6/16

Campsite 286.68 to Splinter’s Cabin 298.5
Total miles: 11.82

Today was a short day because there is a camping restriction from about 300 to 318. No camping within a mile of Deep Creek Springs. So we only had to do almost 12 miles, right before the camping restriction.

Day 14: Rocky climb out of Big Bear

Day 14 – 5/5/16

Highway 18 266.2 to campsite 286.68
Total miles: 20.48

We got up and ready at around 5:45 so that we could get pocket up by Tami by 6:30.  Unfortunately while standing outside waiting we learned that their rental car wasn’t starting for some reason. Well, looks like we are hitching.

We walked to the street and Jim dug out a shirt he had made that says “hiker to trail” on one side. We stood out there for all of 5 minutes when a guy in a mini van gave us a ride. Awesome! On our way to the trail we saw a coyote running in the dry lake bed. My first larger animal sighting. Continue reading

Day 13: Bus to ZERO in Big Bear

Day 13 – 5/4/16

Ziggy and the Bear 210.5 to Big Bear 266
0 miles hiked

Last night I slept in the backyard of Ziggy and the Bear, which is completely carpeted. There was probably close to 35 hikers all spaced out sleeping on their pads and wrapped up in their bags like little hiker burritos.

Day 12: The long descent to Ziggy and the Bear

Day 12 – 5/3/16

Campsite 190.53 to Ziggy and the Bear 210.8
Total miles: 20.17

Woke up today at 5 and Jim came by my tent to tell me he was taking off already. I told him I’d take off in 30 minutes. I packed up as quick as possible to take advantage of as much cool weather as I can since there is a long exposed descent from 8,000 feet to 1,700 feet. Continue reading

Day 11: A short day out of Idyllwild

Day 11 – 5/2/16

Deer Springs junction 183.45 to campsite 190.53
PCT miles 7.08+3.94 Deer Springs side trail+1 road walk
Total miles: 12.02 miles

Leaving the nice warm cabin was hard this morning. I could have stayed there for a week. I got up around 6:15, packed up my pack and we were out of the cabin by 7 am.

It was a mile walk through town to reach the Deer Springs trail that meets back up with the PCT at mile 183.45. The road walk was easy and there were only a few cars that we had to step out of the way of.

Day 10: Idle awhile in Idyllwild

Day 10 – 5/1/16

Idyllwild 179.39

I finally got to sleep in for the first time since I started. I went to sleep around 9:30 pm and didn’t get up until around 7:30 am.  I got up and laid on the couch still sleepy and watched some minions movie with the boys.  My other cousin Chad came by around 9 to take me back to Idyllwild for the rest of my Zero (a zero day is when no miles are hiked). We stopped to get breakfast on the way and I got a giant breakfast burrito with fresh fruit.

Day 9: A long wet road walk

Day 9 – 4/30/16

Paradise Valley cafe 151.5 to Idyllwild 179.39
Total miles: 0 PCT miles, about 17 miles on alternate

I woke up at 5 and looked over and saw Jim getting ready. This is one of the first days I really didn’t want to get up. I was comfy sleeping on the porch of Paradise but I needed to get up to do a road walk before highway 74 became super busy. I packed up all my stuff, shoved a breakfast fiber bar, poptarts, and an energy bar into my hip pocket and took off down the road with Jim. Continue reading
